Old Crow Medicine Show Debuts Phish’s ‘The Wedge’ In Vermont

Old Crow Medicine Show played Shelburne, Vermont near Burlington on Friday as part of the Ben & Jerry’s Concerts on the Green series. The show at the Shelburne Museum Green kicked off the series’ season-closing weekend and saw the string band nodding to Vermont’s own Phish by premiering a cover of “The Wedge.”

OCMS launched the concert with the classic “Tell It To Me.” The band led by Ketch Secor also performed additional favorites from Old Crow’s David Rawlings-produced 2004 album such as “Take ‘Em Away” and the traditional “C.C. Rider.”

Additionally, Old Crow delivered four tracks off their latest studio album, Union Made. The band rolled through “Howdy Do America,” “My Side Of The Mountain,” “Lincoln Highway,” and “Rye Whiskey.”

In the covers category, OCMS offered “Union Maid” (Woody Guthrie) and “Coat Of Many Colors” by Dolly Parton. The main set came to a close with the hit “Wagon Wheel,” which saw a sit-in from Maggie Rose and Tessa Gordon, the latter the daughter of Phish bassist Mike Gordon. Earlier in the concert, the pair also added to the John Prine classic “Angel From Montgomery.”

Old Crow Medicine Show returned to kick off their three-song encore with “The Wedge.” A Phish classic, the song appears on the Vermont quartet’s 1993 album Rift. The band fit in teases of Phish’s “Tweezer” ahead of the first verse of “The Wedge.”

Old Crow treated fans to a faithful rendition of “The Wedge” with a string band twist. Covering Phish at Shelburne is something of a tradition for Old Crow as they’ve also delivered “Bouncing Around The Room,” “Lawn Boy” and “Poor Heart” at past events at the outdoor venue. The encore then came to a close with a take on Buffalo Springfield’s “For What It’s Worth” and Hank Williams’ “I Saw The Light.”
