Watch Trey Anastasio Break Out Acoustic ‘Buffalo Bill’ & ‘Goodbye Head’ In Missoula

The former was last played unplugged eight years prior, while the latter hadn’t been performed by the Phish guitarist in any form since 2020.

Trey Anastasio brought his current acoustic tour to Missoula, Montana over the weekend for sold-out shows on Friday and Saturday. Anastasio dug deep into the Phish and his solo repertoires to perform rare versions of “Buffalo Bill” and “Goodbye Head” during his run at The Wilma Theatre.

The Phish guitarist is on the road with longtime collaborator and keyboardist Jeff Tanski. Each show has consisted of one long set and a multi-song encore.

On Friday, Anastasio filled the setlist with tour debuts including the aforementioned songs as well as “Sigma Oasis,” “Billy Breathes,” “Rift,” “When The Words Go Away,” “Blaze On,” “Sleeping Monkey,” “Horn,” “Simeon,” “The Lizards,” “Everything’s Right,” “Farmhouse” and “Fluffhead.” The first night encore saw the guitarist turn to his Ghosts Of The Forest project for “A Life Beyond The Dream,” play “What’s Going through Your Mind” and wrap the show with Phish classics “Possum,” “Carini” and “Harry Hood.”

Trey Anastasio’s third-ever acoustic “Buffalo Bill” and first since 2018 came mid-set in response to a request from an audience member. “Oh I love ‘Buffalo Bill,'” Anastasio proclaimed before offering up the Phish obscurity. The New Jersey-bred musician cracked himself up as he delivered the Hoist outtake. The crowd dutifully sung the chorus. “Ahh, classic!” chuckled Trey at the conclusion of the song.

Another big surprise came four songs later when Trey trotted out “Goodbye Head” accompanied by Jeff Tanski. The song Anastasio wrote with his daughter Eliza for his 70 Volt Parade project had been shelved since Trey’s Fall 2020 Beacon Jams livestream concert series. Trey Anastasio last performed the song for a live audience on May 29, 2019 in St. Augustine, Florida with TAB.

Saturday’s show at The Wilma also featured a slew of tour debuts, including his first acoustic “Mercury” in nearly five years and his fourth-ever performance of “Valdese.” The latter is the lone song from Phish’s 2024 studio album, Evolve, the quartet has yet to play live. Anastasio punctuated his visit to Missoula with an encore devoted to fan favorites “Wading In The Velvet Sea,” “Taste” and “You Enjoy Myself.”
